WoWmapview is a 3D map viewer for World of Warcraft. It uses the data files included with the game to display the 3D game world, which you can explore by flying anywhere. It allows access to off-limits developer areas and unfinished instance maps.
The reverse engineering of the game data files is a work in progress, so obviously the viewer is neither perfect nor complete, and definitely not optimized.
WoWmapview is released under the GNU General Public License.

- Terrain: some LOD, fog, lighting
- Map objects: liquids, fog
- Models: ribbon and particle effects
- Terrain: high-res heightmap, shadows, animated textures
- Map objects: fixed indoor lighting, some minor fixes
- Models: animation, animated textures
Since I'm not as qualified of a programmer as the professionals at Blizzard, this map viewer is not really geared towards being fast or efficient. The WoW client does a good job of determining what is and isn't visible, and only showing a small subset at a time - WoWmapview loads larger map chunks at once, and caches the recent areas, so there are small delays as new map areas are loaded. And of course, loading all this stuff makes it fairly memory-hungry.
System requirements for WoWmapview:
- at least 512 megs of RAM,
- Geforce2 or better video card (needs to support 2 texture units)
- an installed World of Warcraft client (the open beta version is ok, too)
Detailed documentaton (now in a Wiki) for the game data formats for those interested in the technical side. Any help or input with the reverse engineering would be appreciated.
World of Warcraft is (C) Copyright 2005, Blizzard Entertainment.
Contents of the World of Warcraft data files are the property of Blizzard Entertainment.
Version 0.3 uses SFmpqapi to read from MPQ files.
If this does not exist I would like to request the feature be added, it is a logical extension of being able to print 2-d pics of our in-game peoples already.

Blizzard forbids you to do anything outside of Figureprints.

If you're not going to sell it how is it any different than printing a screenshot?
It doesn't matter what you are or are not going to do with it. 3D printing is something you could potentially do to make money; printing out a simple screenshot is not.
First off, realize the massive difference between doing one for yourself - and selling any. HUGE DIFFERENCE.
Second, there are two different concerns here: copyright/trademark and terms of service.
Terms of service would apply if you are modifying the game files - but exporting isn't doing that, and so TOS issues shouldn't apply.
However copyright/trademark issues still do. I doubt you would get in trouble for personal projects, but selling them or putting online the exported models (or STL conversions) might.
With 3-d printing becoming affordable for the home I am hoping Blizz will allow armory or something to export a printable file.

Same but with my gear I would only pay $19.99.
I believe this to be part of the reason that video games are so collaborative. And also why it suffers from 'shovelware' if you had to come up with a new health bar idea every game you would have very few games. With a customizable character creation, it may be the determining factor
Patents, the rules for physical object, expire after 20 years.
(U.S. Patents filed after June 8, 1995 expire 20 years from the date of filing. U.S. Patents filed prior to June 8, 1995 expire 17 years from the date of issue, or 20 years from the first non-provisional patent application in the family - whichever is later.)
If Blizzard is selling physical objects, even thorough a third party (http://www.figureprints.com/wow/) this is my bet for a win against them
The question of 'potential profit' is kinda dumb. look up you tube for blizzard games. lots of advertising money is being had there. blizzard seems not to care. when 3-d printers become more common, I expect 'straight to stl' features to become common.
large corporations have a suggestion called 'SOPA' that could nuke most of the internet. please google it.
Here is the big part, IF Blizzard is suing over this then you need to worry, but atleast it will then be apart of established case law. if Blizzard is not suing over this then its academic debate... either way blizzard will still be able to call the shots on their web site, and forums by extension
I believe the idea here is to reserve all rights to potential company profit, and let another company test the waters first.
Fair use allows you (from what I understand) to print one for yourself. any attempt to sell one however violates more than just copyright.
Case in point, sculpt a fireball. with all the fire effects glowy bits, and motion?
and as for the 'I am not a lawyer.' disclaimers. it is reasonable to assume none of us are. (I am not employed in the legal field, nor am i qualified to be) there is also an assumption the as an adult you should be able to see that others have self interests. or that you should not talk to strangers.
I am a stranger
